2011 Competitions Annual.
What does it take to win competition? This is a common question we hear regularly from architects, young and old. Firms who formerly showed no interest in competitions have been drawn into the process, mainly because of the proliferation of invited competitions. Every architect has their own story to tell, whether it is Snøhett’s use of a Japanese flag to draw attention to their entry in the Alexandria Library competition, or Cesar Pelli’s remark, “whatever it takes”. Many point to the importance of a careful reading of competition briefs. Most look at the composition of the jury to guess how favorably their interpretation of the problem might be received.
What is lost on many young architects is the importance of research. And here is where we come in. Not only should one look at the history of a particular site, which is the subject of the competition; similar situations must have existed in the past, and the documentation of competitions is one avenue of research which can be rewarding. A few years ago, we received a call from a firm which was involved in an invited competition for a large government project. They had misplaced an issue of our magazine containing an article on a similar subject. After we sent them a pdf file with the article, their approach to the design took an entirely different tack, and they ended up winning the competition.
This collection of articles is a result of our research over the past year, most of which has been documented on our website. Since many firms find it handier to grab a book off the shelf to refer to past projects, rather than search the internet, a comprehensive volume dedicated to some of the more interesting competitions which have taken place during past year was certainly in order.
Finally, entering a competition is not always about winning. Many firms enter simply to acquaint themselves with a new genre. And if their design rises to the top, all the better!
